VPS and VDS: What are the Differences?

Virtual Private Server 'VPS' and Virtual Dedicated Server 'VDS' are sometimes thought to be the same thing but in fact they are not. A VPS and VDS can differ greatly depending on the virtualisation software that is being used

Generally a VPS will runs via Paravirtualization (PV) which will allow the server to run one or more virtual private servers as they are not required to allocate cpu or memory exclusively to one server. Whereas a VDS that runs on VMware ESXi, allows the CPU, Memory and Hard Drive to be allocated exclusively to one server. The downside of this is that ESXi can be pricey. Fortunately there is an alternative. Xen HVM, a free software package, allows the Memory and Hard Drive to be exclusively allocated and the CPU to be somewhat restricted to each server.

VDS or VPS: Which suits your needs?

If all you require is a basic low performance server, then a VPS is generally considered the easier option. VPS are reasonably priced and allows the ability to customize the server to fit your needs. However if you need high performance and the ability to customize your server then a VDS is the virtual server for you. In comparison to a VPS, a VDS is a better alternative for greater performance due to its dedicated resources. If you want dedicated performance or control and don't require a dedicated server a VDS is the recommended solution. Both VDS and VPS hosting are compatible with Windows and Linux operating systems. Notably Windows requires more RAM than Linux when hosting VDS or VPS.
